"Bruno" not exactly welcome?

Is it just me, or is it that people are going out on limbs to distract people from things important as well as unimportant? This reminds me of stunts pulled by the media and entertainment figures during the Great Depression we see in newsreels and read about in books on the Great Depression. What do you think?
